Ambulance Oversight Committee · Meeting of October 5, 2026

Hadley's Ambulance Oversight Committee heard that the fire department will stop automatically dispatching engines to routine medical-facility transfers, minor crashes and psychiatric evaluation calls for a 60-day trial. The acting fire chief said the change responds to resident complaints relayed by the Select Board and will cut liability exposure, fuel costs and wear on apparatus while freeing crews for training, saying "we are just not automatically getting dispatched." The department finished onboarding three new EMTs and is interviewing candidates this week for a permanent chief. Clinical lead Dale Lafayette outlined AI tools, including a University of Michigan-developed system reviewing run reports and an "AI Stroke" imaging rollout with Fairfax County, Virginia, and San Bernardino, California.

Members also discussed requesting a second ALS ambulance for Halloween weekend near UMass Amherst and flagged Action's contract renewal, due July 28, along with a $150,000 subsidy benchmark in its rebate formula.
