Hadley's Capital Planning and Finance committees opened FY27 budget talks, weighing a $5.9 million Hopkins Academy heating overhaul against routine fleet and road requests. Town Administrator Nate Malloy said free cash will total "a million dollars or more," with roughly $500,000 in annual within-levy borrowing capacity. School staff presented three Hopkins HVAC options ranging from $5.9 million to $7.2 million net of incentives, with the school committee backing air-source heat pumps; Finance Committee member Amy Feiten asked about financing it through school choice revenue instead of a debt exclusion.
Police presenter Mitch defended the department's six-vehicle cruiser fleet, saying "one of the things I really miss about Hadley is how well we take care of our equipment" keeps officers from leaving. DPW requests included a $150,000 water tank replacement, $1 million in sewer repairs and a $200,000 bridge-match request Malloy wants preserved for grant competitiveness. No capital items were voted on; Christine Pipchinski was elected Capital Planning vice chair.
